Sorry, just realized how long it took to upload a video...So i'm not gonna upload anymore up. But the whole experiment was pretty much like this, and I'll put up some pictures.

This is a really pretty one...I liked it.

Anyways, the report took really, really really long to do. I wan't sure about my results, cause it took up 4 whole pages because the tables were really big. I hope that is ok. It's not that there is alot of info, just big table...

and the discussion was difficult, but i think i have covered everything needed to.

I know I haven't been really active on the blog, but just for the sake of it, my spirit was always with you!XP HAHAHHAHA~~~

Bye, fare thee well~~

P.s. Hi Ms Zhang:)

Results for experiment

Well, here we are, the results of my experiment.
I took some pictures and video. I did my first experiment around one and a half week ago, and my second and third a couple of days ago.

This is the first experiment:

The equipment are

  • food colouring

  • milk (I decided to use pura milk instead of the one I had before, because my family liked the pura milk better, and it is full cream, so no problem)

  • Four different brands of detergent with different price range

  • Cotton tips

  • Syringe (this replaces the dropper because I couldn't find one in my house, but works just as well)

Equipment was set up as followed:

And I did it three times, following the method, of course.

I found out that the more expensive the detergent was, the less effective it is at removing grease. Pretty interesting huh? So you don't neccessarily have to buy the most expensive one, cause they might not be as effective. But then again, the more expensive ones tend to be kinder towards you hand and skin. So I juess the choice is up to you.

The next blog is all gonna be on pictures and video for the experiment. Some of them are really pretty! The report is done, finally, and I am dead, but it is over!! YAY~~

The purpose for the food colouring

Sorry, I had been busy, so hadn't have time to post things (but no excuses). I've finished my experiment, which is of course, a plus, and are well on my way to finish the report, which will certainly take a while.
Thanks Ms Zhang. I see that I did not explain my experiment quite clear. I will attempt to explain it here.
The purpose, of the aim of my experiment is to determine whether the brand of detergent would affect the effectiveness (I think that is how you spell it) of the detergent in removing the grease. The purpose of detergent is so that oily grease may be removed during washing, as water alone is not able to remove the grease.

Within the detergent, there are chains of molecule. However, these molescule have very differnt ends. On one end, there is the water-hating molecule, otherwise known as hydrophobic (lacking affinity for water, repel and not absorb water, tending to not dissolve in, mix with or be wetted by water, hydro-water, phobic-afraid). The other end, there is water-loving components, known as hydrophilic (having a stong affinity for wate, tending to dissolve in, mix in or be wetted by water, kind of like a sponge).

The hydrophobic hydrocarbon are repelled by water, but instead, are attracted to grease and oil, whilst the hydrophilic are attracted to water. So we have chains of these unique molecules in the detergent, with one end attracted to grease and the other attracted to water. This becomes very effective when removing the oil from thing, as the hydrophobic end binds with the grease, and the hydrophilic end becomes attached to the water molecules, thus allowing the detergent, along with the grease, to be pulled away when rinsing.

A little tip for anyone who hates washing: warm or hot water makes removing the grime easier, as it melts the fats and oil, and allow detergent to dissolve and remove the grease easier and faster :)

That is the fundemental explanation for the chemistry of detergent, and how they work in removing grease. As for my experiment, I am testing whether the different brands will affect the effectiveness of the detergent in removing the grease. To test this, I would need to be able to see the process of the removal of grease itself. This is where the food colouring becomes essential to my experiment.

I have brought 4 different brands of detergent, each ranging in prices. There is one of the most expensive brand, one medium expensive, one medium cheap and a cheapest brand. The source of grease will be provided by full cream milk (this is why I would need milk), as there will certainly be quite a lot of fat in full cream milk. If I put a little bit of detergent into the milk, there would bound to be movement, as the hydrophobic end of the molecule is attracted by oil and fat. But is the milk is pure white. how can I observe those movement?

This is where the food colouring comes into play. I thought, the milk is white, why not add colour to it? It's the same theory as movement of water. When people wants to know where a rip is at a beach, they put colouring into the water, and thus obseve the movement of water. So that is the purpose of the food colouring, so that I will be able to clearly observe the movement of the milk, and see which one will react for longer, which one faster.

I hope that this explanation was clearer, and easier to understand.

I will later post my results, the video I took while I was conducting my experiment. I find my result to be very amusing. This experiment was inspired by a thought I had a while ago. The thought was "people spend more money on more expensive things, under the pretense that they are getting a better product, a product that would be more effective. But do they actually work better? Are we actually spending more money for a better product, or are the cheaper product the same as, or in some cases, better, than the more expensive ones."

I was looking forward to what the experiment would show me. So folks, watch out on what you're buying. You may never know that you could spend less money on the same thing with different brand, and it would be more effective.

The world is full of colours~~

Hey guys, how yall doing??

I bring good news from me!! Remember how in the last post I mentioned my problem, how I couldn't find food colouring? Well, I found it!

Well, my dad found it for me! I'm so happy!

So all I've got to do is to select 4 very different brands of detergent and I would have all my equipments, and my experiment would be set and ready to go.

The colour I chose for the food colouring was red, green, blue, and yellow.

Oh, and did I mention that I found these in Coles??

Experiment Plan

The equipments I need for my experiment are:

  • 4 large plates (with dent in the middle)
  • full cream milk (coles brand)
  • 4 different brands of detergents
  • cotton tips (coles brand)
  • camera
  • *4 different colours of food colouring

*I've decided to use 4 different colours instead of 3, as it would be able to show more of the direction of movement of the milk. The colours are red, green, blue and yellow. I'm hoping that these colours will go nice with each other.

Aim: Whether the brand of detergent will affect the effectiveness of grease removal

Method:

  1. Prepare equipment
  2. Set the 4 plates on a flat surfaced table/desk
  3. Pour equal amount of full cream milk in all of the plates
  4. Drop one drop of each colour of food colouring into the middle of each plate
  5. Dip one end of a cotton tip into a detergent
  6. Place the end of the cotton tip with detergent into the middle of a plate
  7. Record observation
  8. Repeat steps 5, 6 and 7 for each brand of detergent
  9. Take pictures of result for future referencing

For more accurate comparison, I may try performing steps 5, 6 and 7 simultaneously. In other words, place the cotton tips with different brands of detergents into the 4 plates at the same time. To do this, I would require another person to assist me, as I do not have 4 arms. It would also be a good idea to take a video of the result, for future reference of re-analysing and compare the results gained from different brands of detergent.

This experiment would need to be performed several times to ensure the accuracy of the results gained.

I encountered a problem while looking where I could purchase the equipments I would need for the experiment. I have had no problem, except for one. I do not know where I could buy food colouring. I went on coles and woolworths online shopping list, and I was not able to locate food colouring. So that is a big problem. I'm going to have a nice look around this weekend to try and find food dye, as this is the only equipment I need to be able to perform my experiment!! I did ask my dad, and he said you could buy them anywhere...well, let's hope he is right. If I cannot find any, then I must think of a replacement for food dye, which will certainly be bothersome. I'm just waiting for exams to finish and I will be starting my experiment! Yay~~XD

Oh, and a pretty interesting fact. While I was researching food dye, I found out that some food colouring are made from bugs. How gross~~they use bugs like beetles to create natural food colours and put them in food and such.

Beautiful photo of milk

This is the milk which I have decided to use for my experiments (for now, if I find cheaper ones, then I'll use it). It is full cream milk, which is just what I need for my experiment.

For the food dye, I'm thinking, to create a nice colour, and to be able to see the flow of the milk clearly, red, blue and green. These are the primary colours after all. It will create a nice contrast, and will be obvious, to observe the movement of milk.

Tis a nice picture of my wonderful milk:

Ain't it beautiful?? It's blue too...and it's coles brand. It tastes good too...XP

Climatic Graph~~

Right Now, I'm about to drop... I'm so tired~~Zzzz....=_=

But good thing is, I have finished the climatic graph!! Yay~~

But funny thing is, editing took longer than doing the graph itselt...and the process is extremely frustrating...

Well, anyways, I want to sleep, so, Night night~~
